NSSO – Swim and Track Athletes – State Games

Congratulations to all athletes who competed at the April District Swim or the May Regional Athletic competitions.  Everyone did their best effort and we were proud of all.

The delay in sending out results has been predominantly based on the fact that we wanted to be able to report on who is advancing to the State Celebration Games on July 30-31st in Waukesha at Carroll University.  (Tennis, bocce and softball state games are the same weekend)

With the quota system, we are generally unable to have all that qualified advance to state; we are limited in the quota number that we receive.  Sometimes we can request – and get – additional quota, sometimes not.  And that’s what happened this year.  We received extra space for swim, but not for track.  The names listed below are advancing to the state games and will continue to attend the practice sessions thru the end of July.  The athletes who competed, but for whom we are unable to take to state, should choose their preferred summer sport = some do bocce, some do softball, and maybe even tennis.

Swim – the athletes who are entered for the State Celebration Games are: John Avery; Lynn Carus; Yan Chen; Christine Cherne; Cooper Collins; Brian Glenn; Carrie Krutina; Melissa Krutina; Jacob Nowak; Jennifer Onufrock; and Kim Raatz.

Athletics/track – the athletes who are entered for the State Celebration Games are: Michelle Buchanan; Tim Canaday; Creed Grams; Cathy Hanin; Matthew Hanrahan; Michael Lunz; Jeff Strelow; and Tim Vola.

Info (schedule, etc) will be distributed after we receive it – probably not much before a week before the games.

Congrats to all!

Summer Sports Begin Monday, May 23rd

THERE IS NO REGISTRATION FORM, PLEASE CALL, TEXT OR EMAIL YOUR CHOICE! (Kevin 262-894-5120, kjszydel@wi.rr.com)  (Linda 414-550-5357, brothen@uwm.edu)

  1. Softball = we will probably only have one team this year, so please let us know soon what your plans are.  Softball will be on WEDNESDAY EVENINGS FROM 6:30-8:00pm, at NICOLET HIGH SCHOOL (note new location and Wednesdays’ instead of Thursdays as the past).  First practice will be May 25, 2022.  Tournament dates are June 18th, July 17th and July30-31st.
  2. Bocce = practices will be on Mondays atBrown Deer High/Middle School; near the soccer practice field, at the corner of 60th and Bradley; start date will be May 23, 2022; practices are 6:30-8:00pm. No practice Memorial Day or the Fourth of July. Tournament dates are June 18th, July 17th and July30-31st.
  3. TENNIS = Tennis has been set up for Mondays, 6:00-7:30pm. Practices will again be at Brown Deer High School.  The first practice will be June 6, 2022.  No practice Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.  Tournament date is July 30-31st..

Remember:  Participation in a MINIMUM of two games prior to the district tournament and entries due date is mandatory.  Any athlete not participating in at least two games will NOT be registered for competition at the area/district/regional  level, and  therefore will not continue on the team for the season after the required tournament. Attendance/participation in the District Competition is mandatory for all sports.  If you do not attend the District Competition, you will not advance to state; if you are doing a team sport, you will not advance even if your team advances, nor will you remain on the team roster for the rest of the sports season.   If a team does not advance, practices will continue as normal for all players.

USA GAMES are almost here!

We are proud of all of our athletes, coaches, families, friends and all supporters.  This year we have extra kudos to those participating in the USA Games in Orlando Florida, the first week of June:

Athletes – Cathy Hanin (bocce), Carolyn Kiewit (bowling) and Dan Zalewski (bowling).

Coaches – Micheal Mentzel (bowling), Bob Selingo (swim) and Kevin Szydel (bocce).

GO TEAM WISCONSIN!

Spring and Summer Sports Updates

With SOWI changes in schedule this year (some changes due to COVID and some because of the timing of the USA Games), we had different Spring and Summer schedules (hopefully to return to normal after this summer).  With the variations, we had only athletes doing the sports for competition in spring and will continue that policy this summer.  There is NO Summer games at Stevens Point this year; swim and track will have competition at the same tournament as Softball, Bocce and Tennis on July 30-31st at Carroll University in Waukesha.

We are ALWAYS proud of our athletes and the good sportsmanship that they show – win or lose.  We appreciate that they do the best job that they can.

Swim, Track, Bocce, Softball and Tennis will be the sports in State competition on Saturday-Sunday, July 30-31.  Yes, all 5 sports.  Athletes can only compete in ONE sport in that competition, and therefore practice in only the one sport this summer.

  1. Soccer had one team this year with a shortened season the State competition was held on May 14th.  Congrats to the Division 2 Gold medalists = North Suburban Cougar Kits.  A winning combination of players from both the Cougars and the Kit Kats did themselves proud.  The soccer season has ended for this year.
  2. Swim had fewer swimmers than in prior years – but they’ve done great.  The District competition was held April 30th.  We follow SOWI rules on selection of athletes for state competitions and, as have not yet received our quota number attendance at state.  Athletes who qualified in at least one event, will continue practicing swimming for the months of June and July.  We will contact all swimmers once we have the quota and can make the final selection.  PRACTICES WILL BE AT NICOLET HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE MONTHS OF JUNE AND JULY, on Tuesdays at the same time as the regular season.
  3. Track & Field (Athletics) was also down in numbers but we were pleased with everyone who came.  Our weather has been as usual – some iffy and some not so good days; we greatly appreciate those hardy souls who showed up in the cold and wind!.  The District Athletics competition May 14th. Athletes who qualified in at least one event, will continue practicing track for the months of June and July.  We will contact all track athletes once we have the quota and can make the final selection.  PRACTICES WILL BE AT NICOLET HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE MONTHS OF JUNE AND JULY, on Tuesdays at the same time as the regular season. (note the evening change)

For athletes not competing in track or swimming, the choices are listed here.  Only those competing and able to make all the tournaments will be eligible to practice this year (athletes must be available for all, including state, even though we won’t know until later which teams qualify for state).  We need responses as soon as possible, as we hope to accommodate all who are interested, but with limits on numbers per team, we may have to ask some to make secondary choices.

GENERAL

Drivers:  Please remember to be on time to pick up your athlete(s) at the end of each practice and make sure that the athlete joins the practice when dropped off.

As a reminder, we do not call athletes/coaches when we cancel due to bad weather.  Some years are better than others, and there are times that facilities are not being available for reasons other than weather – and, unfortunately, often at the last minute – so it never hurts to call anyway – we appreciate it.  In the event of bad weather (rain, snow, or extreme heat/cold), you should check the Hotline prior to the practice start time to see if practice has been cancelled.  We try to update the hotline about 45 minutes before practice.  For example, if practice starts at 6:00pm, a message will be on the Hotline about 5:15pm.  This means that athletes should not call their coaches to check to see if practice is cancelled.  We will continue to try to reach all athletes and coaches for practice cancellations that are NOT weather related, but it is still a good idea to listen to the Hotline just before you leave for practice, because it is not always possible to reach everybody – such as unexpected pool problems or muddy ground/wet track at Brown Deer.  A light rain may not cancel a practice as competitions are held even in a rain.  A general email will be sent out if there is sufficient time.
