Swim Competition – Saturday, April 30th

2022 DISTRICT AQUATICS COMPETITION

Saturday, April 30, 2022

9:00am to @ 3:00pm

YMCA at Pabst Farms

1750 Valley Road, Oconomowoc, 53066

Dear Swimmers and Volunteers:

Get ready for this year’s Special Olympics Wisconsin District Aquatics Competition.  You have been training hard preparing for this event.  Please arrive at 8:45am and check in with Bob or Kevin before proceeding to the locker room to change in time to have warm-up opportunity.   Warm-up swim time is 9:00-9:30am; Opening at 9:45am, with competition starting immediately following.

Please bring the following in your black North Suburban bag (or equivalent):

  • Swimsuit – wear your NSSO competition swimsuit, if you have one
  • 2 towels
  • A lock for the locker, if you use one
  • Goggles and/or cap if you use them
  • Flip-flops or shower shoes
  • Money for lunch if you plan on eating, there is no lunch provided; you may bring your own snacks.  Remember to eat ONLY after asking a coach when you should eat.
  • It’s usually COOL in the staging area (gym); make sure you have a cover-up, sweater coat, pants, something, just in case. There are no chairs in the staging area – bring one if you plan on needing one to use for the day.
  • DON’T FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR NAME BADGE TO A COACH BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

Volunteers – bring your enthusiasm and wear shorts and a t-shirt if you plan on being in the pool area since it gets very warm in that area.

Athletes  – you may eat a light lunch sometime during the meet as determined appropriate by a coach, depending on the competition schedule – do not plan on eating a heavy meal.  We suggest that the athletes eat a light meal before leaving home for the competition.

Parents and other spectators – space in the pool area is limited; so plan your schedule to be there in plenty of time to watch the events.  As always, we cannot tell you an exact time when each event is being raced.   If you have any questions, contact Kevin (262-894-5120 cell) or Linda (414-550-5357 cell).

AT THIS TIME SPECTATORS ARE ALLOWED = this could change as COVID-19 numbers change almost daily.

Good Luck!!

Monday March 28, 2022 – Update

There will be no swim or track practice this week because of the Brown Deer schools spring break. Hopefully the next week will bring better weather.

There will be soccer practice – indoors at the Safety Academy on Wednesday March 30, 2022, 6:30-8:00pm.

NSSO Swim Meet Friday March 25, 2022 – Update

Swimmers will have use of the locker rooms on Friday night. Having said that, it is recommended that the swimmers come already wearing the swim suit under other clothes, and change out of the wet swimsuit before leaving after the meet is over.

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR SWIM MEET FRIDAY MARCH 25, 2022

We have just been notified that the pool at Hamilton will not be available this Friday.

The swim meet will be at South Division High School, 1515 W. Lapham.

Enter from the parking lot on the east side of the school (entrance off 13th) = use that entrance to the building and someone will be inside to direct you to, the pool.

Also the expected ending time is about 7:30pm, maybe even a little sooner.

Spectators are ok – best to have a mask with you just in case it’s needed.

Spring 2022 Updates

Tuesday night should be ok for swimming = remember the swim meet Friday night and no practice on the 29th.

Wednesday night for SOCCER should be ok as it’s indoors.

Wednesday night for TRACK is iffy = weather may be a problem. Call the hotline 414-327-1016 before you come.

Spring Sports Update -Monday, February 14, 2022

Swim, Soccer and Track

Main disclaimer.   COVID numbers rise and fall and COVID protocols are still in place.  We follow SOWI, governmental and facility guidelines for practices and gatherings.  We plan on starting these three sports, but cannot guarantee that the sports will last the full season or not go back and forth for weekly practices.  We hope we will continue to be on the decreasing COVID numbers, but weekly practices could be cancelled at any time – as could the entire season like the basketball season = don’t like being so pessimistic, but we face the COVID problem daily.

Basic guideline – no spectators allowed at any practice site, elsewhere in/at facility should be ok.  Masks – not possible for swimming, and probably on/off at other practices.

IMPORTANT:  vaccination verification will be required as will the two forms for COVID-19 and Communicable Disease.  The two forms are attached to this email* and the online link for the SOWI vaccination verification is here.  If you have already done these, you do not have to do it again – once they are done, the information is on file and doesn’t have to be redone each sport season.  If you need help submitting your vaccination card, contact Linda.  If you need print copies of the two forms, contact Linda.

If you plan on competing in track, swimming or soccer, keep reading.  First = practices will be open only to ATHLETES PLANNING ON COMPETING IN THAT SPORT.  With rules on numbers, spacing, and activities, no participants this year.  Please let Kevin and/or Linda know which sport you are planning on this spring.  If you are not going to do a sport this spring, we would also appreciate hearing that.  If you plan on swimming, tell us soon.  If you plan on soccer or track please tell us by March 8.

All the information on each sport below is based on good COVID numbers.  Emails will be sent out and the weekly information will also be on the NSSO Hotline – 414-327-1016.

Soccer – we plan on starting Wednesday March 16 with indoor practices at the Milwaukee Safety Academy, 6:30-7:30pm.  Weekly practices will be on Wednesday’s, same time; we won’t know until later when we actually go outside to Brown Deer High/Middle School grounds.  At this time, we will be doing soccer skills only, no team activities are yet allowed.  We won’t know the full season until and unless there are changes in that.  If it is just skills all season, we do not know what, if any, competition will be held.  If there is team play, there will be a competition in May – info will be out later and we may adjust the length of each practice.

Track –we plan on starting Wednesday March 16 at Brown Deer High/Middle School (BDHS) – WEATHER PERMITTING as always, we do live in Wisconsin and decent track weather has been known to make it’s first appearance in late July.  While all sport practices are weather dependent (snow, sleet, etc can cancel even an indoor practice), sports outdoors get hit the worst. So historically, we recommend paying attention to the weather and checking weekly – and continue to recommend that.   All practices will be at BHDS on Wednesday’s same time excluding Wednesday March 30 (spring break).  Practice for track is 6:30-7:30pm.

Swim – we are scheduled to start at Brown Deer High/Middle School (BDHS) on Tuesday, February 22nd.   Practice will be 6:30-8:00pm.  At this time, we are able to use the locker rooms, but BDHS could change that at any time, as well as change their own COVID protocols.  Practices will be every Tuesday same time at BDHS except Tuesday, March 29 (spring break).

Thanks to all for your patience as we work through this pandemic and the havoc it is creating in our lives.

‘Please send these two completed and signed forms to Linda – either email or regular mail. I will then keep my records and forward them to state.  Thanks.     Linda Brothen, 3131 S. 77th St., Milwaukee  53219; 414-550-5357;  brothen@uwm.edu

Winter Sports Update -Monday, February 14, 2022

NO team basketball, skills or snow this year

I don’t believe this is unexpected news.

While COVID numbers have, thankfully, been decreasing substantially and quicker than originally expected – it was not soon enough to salvage Team Basketball, Basketball Skills, or Snowshoe racing (although snowshoe racing needs more snow and less COVID as well).

So we thank all who patiently waited for the hoped for weekly call about the sports – the waiting is over.

There will be NO Team Basketball this year, no Snowshoe racing and no Basketball Skills.  We await the 2023 season.

There are still COVID protocols to follow – SOWI, facility and governmental – and these will affect the upcoming sports season.

Winter Sports Update – Thursday, February 4, 2022

There will be no practices until further notice.

We are pleased that the COVID numbers are coming down across the state, but the county numbers are not yet within the range allowed for Special Olympics activities.  So, probably as no surprise, there will be no practices until further notice.  This would be no team basketball, no basketball skills and no snowshoeing (of course, we’d prefer snow for that anyway.)

Also at this time, we have to admit that we are uncertain whether we will be able to start swimming this month as we normally would.  With COVID numbers still up and we are waiting to hear from Brown Deer school about what new guidelines they have put into place since this latest surge.  There are also SOWI guidelines about crossing county boundaries with differing county COVID numbers.  Sorry, but assume no swimming practices until we pass on the word that we are good – when we can, we should be back on Tuesday’s at Brown Deer High/Middle School.

Hope for the best – we hope to continue in this trend towards improvement.
